Break the Ceiling Touch the Sky - World Edition 2018, Singapore

Last Monday, some Enactus members had the chance to take part in an annual summit, Break the Ceiling Touch the Sky World Edition 2018 themed on unlocking the full potential of gender diversity in businesses today. Panels during the summit shared best practices on cutting-edge insights and tips for women leaders to progress in leadership. The open-minded attitude of the speakers and the opportunity to engage in the Q&A sessions after each panel made the summit a very interactive event.

The summit started with a panel about the forces that are impacting our modern world and the influences they have on careers of leaders, especially women. Different senior executives (to the speakers) from companies like The Coca-Cola Company, P&G, Sandoz, or SC Johnson & Son shared their perspectives on disruptive forces like artificial intelligence, sustainability, diversity and more.

Afterwards, several case studies were presented, showing the biggest challenges in unlocking the power of diversity within different companies. The main goal of this session was to learn about the unconscious bias and strategies to tackle insufficient role models. Leaders shared some thoughts, including one-to-one mentoring programmes, how more females have to believe in their own strengths, and that gender diversity should be approached as a strategy of the whole company.

The keynote by James Michael Lafferty, CEO Fine Hygienic Holding, evoked a sustained impression, shedding light that many managers don't see the need to accept and force diversity in their personal life - "Diversity is not only 9 to 5", was his message.

Before the lunch break, career advice by Kash Shaik, Founder & CEO Besomebody Inc, was also inspiring. He said that resilience is the most important thing during a professional career. Speaking from his own experience, he explained that the way to success can be a very lonely road. “One might have cheerleaders at the beginning of a new project, job or whatever and one might have cheerleaders when succeeding, but the middle is where it's going to be quiet and lonely. That's why it is important to always have a vision of what to accomplish.

After lunch, the speed mentoring by the top leaders was a highlight. Each table of the room could choose one leader for a personal one-hour conversation. From an Enactus perspective, these conversations were very personal and one or the other inside tip has been exchanged.

Last but not least, experiences concerning the balance between career, family life, and personal life were shared. The key-takeaway was that energy has to be managed across physical, mental, emotional, financial and spiritual components of the career.

We would like to thank Anthony Rose, Chairman & CEO House of Rose Professional Pte. Ltd., for giving Enactus members the chance to participate in this inspiring and perfectly organized summit. We are looking forward to Break the Ceiling Touch the Sky 2019!
